Prolapsed Rectum?

My wife has has finally admitted to me after years of suffering, probably due to childbirth straining, that her rectum pops out an inch or so when she goes to the toilet. She then has to tuck it back in again and it can sometimes be painful. Does anyone know of the correct name for this condition and can it be fixed?
